Mini Competitions

Mini Competition #1:  🌏 Lost in Translation

Find an idiom or expression in the language you’re learning that sounds strange or funny when translated literally into your native language. Share the original expression, the literal translation, and what it actually means. Funniest or most unique expression wins!

In Spanish, "No tener pelos en la lengua" literally translate to English as, "to have no hairs on your tongue."
However, it actually means to speak your mind honestly without holding back.
Hahaha, imagine thinking someone HAS to grow hair on their tongue just to tell the truth!
Como hablante de inglés que está aprendiendo Español, ¡esto me dio mucha risa!

- Ayden P, St. Philip’s College

Mini Competition #2: 📸 Language in the Wild

Spot the language you’re learning out in the real world—a package, menu, street sign, product label, etc. We’re looking for something cool, quirky, or totally unexpected. Take a quick photo and tell us what the word or phrase means, plus what makes it cool, quirky, or totally unexpected.

A “Carniceria” is a meat store. This meat store called the “small hill” is located in the town
I live on the Main St in Longmont. It is a store that sells mostly meat but you can also buy Piñatas and other things.
I think it is really cool that here in the US there is a diversity of different languages
and stores where you walk and you feel you are in a different country.

- Sofia C, Longmont High School

Mini Competition #3: 🔍 The Cultural Lens

Tell us how the language you’re learning has helped you uncover a deeper understanding of its culture. Think about specific words that don’t exist in your native language, or polite expressions that completely changed how you view the people and their traditions.

I am learning Spanish, and a word that I learned or saw online recently was “sobremesa”
which in English essentially means that is the time that is spent at the dinner table
after you are all done eating dinner because you want the moments to last longer.
I thought it was so cool to have a word that describes such a deep, nostalgic feeling,
and I wish we had a word like this in English.
